The 3rd BBNet Conference: “Biorefining – Clean Growth – Net Zero” took place over three days, between 10th and 12th April 2024 in Sheffield, UK.

Over eight engaging sessions critical topics were explored, such as the challenge of scaling up, engineering biology for clean growth, the circular economy and policy for sustainable biorefineries.

Over 130 participants from eight countries engaged in 36 different presentations and flash talks from leading academics, industrialists and policy representatives in the field of biorefining.

The delegation was made up of representatives from 48 institutions and 33 businesses, as well as attendees from NGOs and UK government departments.

Networking and poster presentations preceded the two evening dinners where many new collaborations were ignited and existing relationships advanced.

Feedback received to date includes:

  • Great to network with UK colleagues across the whole range of disciplines working on Biorefining. Excellent opportunities. Great research being presented. Great speakers. I was able to catch up with previous collaborations, but also with other very interesting people I had previously met at LBNet/BBNet/Supergen events and not managed to collaborate yet. Senior lecturer – UK University.
  • Love the BBNet community – a diverse range of companies and academics from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Future collaborations are already in discussion with some connections made at meeting for work or advice. R&D unit manager.
  • All sessions were impactful really. I always like to learn what is happening in other areas outside of my own research area so I am able to locate myself in the wider biorefining context and learn how to integrate my work with all the other feedstocks, processes and product/applications being developed, including regulatory and policy frameworks, and all sessions delivered on that. Senior lecturer – UK University.

For BBNet members a copy of the conference programme and slides from a selection of the speakers are available to access in our resources area.

We are already looking forward to next year’s event, which will be the final BBNet conference and celebration event. Look out for the save the date, coming soon!
